Looking for a fun way to explore our Northern Nevada landscape? Might I suggest ditching traditional transport and opting for al fresco seats on the rails with a RailZephyr adventure!

Departing from Eastgate Depot in Carson City (just over the hill from Mound House), RailZephyr offers a fresh perspective on Nevada’s railroad heritage, combining outdoor recreation, local history, and high-desert scenery into one memorable outing through the Carson River Canyon.

The excursion takes a little more than one hour and covers a five-mile round trip portion of the historic Virginia & Truckee route. Riders travel side by side on a specially designed, shiny orange, two-person railbike. Unlike a traditional bicycle, the railbike sits directly on the tracks, so there’s no balancing act required.

This is not the first time Carson City has offered railbike excursions. The original operator Freedom Rail - in partnership with Visit Carson City and V&T Railway Commission – led tours from 2020-2022. However, the new RailZephyr bikes feature upgraded electric pedal assist, providing plenty of pedaling without quite the "leg day" workout.

Children ages 4 and older may ride when accompanied by an adult, giving families another option for exploring the region together. Comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen and sunglasses are recommended. Water and light snacks are included, making this an easygoing outing rather than an all-day expedition.

Currently, there are still openings for rides on Saturday, Oct. 31 – what a great way to spend Nevada Day! For more details, FAQ, or to reserve a ride, visit railzephyr.com.

After this weekend, keep an eye out for the Spring 2027 calendar, expected early next year. The Virginia & Truckee Railroad and Visit Carson City are also partners, so watch for details on those calendars too!

RailZephyr offers a chance to slow down and appreciate a familiar corner of Nevada from a new angle. Sometimes the best way to rediscover home is to take the road less traveled — or, in this case, the rails less pedaled!

If you have not been to Eastgate Depot, take a short detour off Hwy 50 to check out the surrounding area – the depot is near Pony Express Air Park, Carson Ridge Disc Golf Park, and Carson City Rifle & Pistol Range, plus it's across the highway from the Centennial Park Archery Range and Eagle Valley East Course ... so much room for activities!
