VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — August 11, 2026 — Storey County School District (SCSD), in partnership with Miles Construction, will celebrate a major milestone in the construction of the new Virginia City Combined K-8 School with a beam and tree topping ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, at 1 p.m.

The ceremony will recognize the placement of one of the final structural beams on the new school and celebrate the significant progress made since construction began. A traditional evergreen tree will be placed atop the structure as part of the topping ceremony, a longstanding construction tradition that recognizes the achievement and the craftspeople, contractors, partners, and community members who have helped bring the project to this important stage.

The new Virginia City Combined K-8 School represents a significant investment in the future of Storey County students and the Virginia City community. Designed to serve students from kindergarten through eighth grade, the new campus will provide a modern learning environment while continuing Virginia City’s longstanding tradition of community-centered education.

“This milestone is about much more than placing a beam,” said SCSD Superintendent Dan Sadler. “It represents the commitment our community has made to the future of our students. We are excited to see this new school taking shape and grateful to everyone whose hard work and  support are making it possible.”

Miles Construction has worked alongside SCSD and project partners to move the new school from plans into a facility that will serve generations of Virginia City  students starting in the 2027-2028 school year.

The topping ceremony provides an opportunity to recognize the construction team and celebrate the progress of a project that will become an important part of the Virginia City community for decades to come.
