Pony Express Pride Gallops Through Dayton
Blue skies, Old West fun, and a little bit of lawlessness made for a memorable day as Dayton Main Street hosted its America 250 Pony Express ReRide Celebration on Saturday, May 30. Hundreds of community members dusted off their boots and moseyed over to Pike and Main in Dayton's Old Town District to celebrate America's 250th birthday and the upcoming 2026 National Pony Express Re-Ride with history, entertainment, and hands-on activities for all ages.
The day was packed with activities, costumes, music, and even stick pony races. Visitors toured historic buildings—including Dayton’s own Pony Express Station—learned about Old Town and Pony Express history, enjoyed speeder car rides on the historic Dayton Depot tracks, tried their luck panning for gold near the site of the 1849 Gold Creek discovery, and played classic frontier games. Nevada State Records Manager Audie Robinson also offered a history lesson and demonstration of the transcontinental telegraph line, the communication device that ended the Pony Express.
Guests mingled with the Virginia City Silent Riders and other colorful characters from the past, while aspiring deputies searched for Dayton’s Most Wanted criminals to help the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office bring justice to the frontier—and earn a prize in the process. The Historical Society of Dayton Valley and several local nonprofit partners joined food vendors in keeping both minds and stomachs well-fed throughout the day.
The biggest excitement of the afternoon—besides convincing grown adults to gallop around on stick ponies—was the high-noon robbery at The Odeon. Thanks to some sharp-eyed young lawmen and lawwomen, the outlaw was quickly tracked down, captured, and tossed into the historic Firehouse/Jail before he could make off with the loot.
Throughout May and early June, Pony Express Nevada/Pony Express Territory has helped coordinate re-ride celebrations in communities across the Silver State. If you missed the Dayton festivities, there’s still time to saddle up and enjoy a taste of the American West in Silver Springs/Fort Churchill (June 5), Fallon (June 20), and Eureka (June 27). The 2026 National Pony Express Re-Ride will depart from St. Joseph, Mo. on June 15 and will make its way along Hwy 50 on June 24. The Old Town Dayton mochila handoff will take place at the Union Hotel/Pony Express Station around 10:35 a.m.
