The Saturday, April 25 season opener of the Donovan Mill Live Stamp Run Days proved a success. The volunteer crew has been working hard for weeks to prepare the mill—we believe it is now the cleanest it has been since 1934! The first Blacksmith class provided nonstop activity around the forges and piqued the interest of several history tour participants, who are now interested in attending a future class.

Throughout the day, volunteers repeatedly heard guests say, “I had no idea this was going on up here.” Visitors came to the Donovan Mill not quite knowing what to expect, but appreciated history coming to life as they watched and listened to the stamp mill clatter then felt the heat of the blacksmith forges, creating a full visceral experience.

David, a docent from Bodie State Historic Park, came out to show support and experience the mill—his excitement was evident. Our biggest fans are often those who truly appreciate Western history.

Another special visitor was a young girl named Lily. Normally, a child her age might become bored with the history and milling descriptions; however, Lily paid close attention and was able to answer questions about what she was learning, making the tour extra fun.

Mark your calendar: the next Stamp Run Day is Saturday, May 9, with live equipment demonstrations at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., featuring main stamp batteries #3 and #4, the rotary stamp, the concentrating table, and machine shop belt-driven tools. A full tour of the mill will follow the demonstrations.
