Dayton Kiwanis Members Tour Dayton Museum and Old Town
The Kiwanis Club of Dayton Township visited the Dayton Museum on Sunday, April 13, with docent Pat Neylan providing the tour. It appeared the group enjoyed the many antique exhibits with the Native American local history, mining and milling and enlarged old photos catching their eye. Besides showing the Museum, Neylan also guided the group through the sector of Old Town Dayton that included the 1875 firehouse and other nearby historical sites.
The Dayton Museum is found on Shady Lane in Old Town and the schoolhouse was built by residents with locally hewed stone in 1865 as a one-room school with a classroom added for high school students in1873. The high school on Pike Street was not constructed until 1918 and today is the Dayton Community Center. Pike Street was the original California Trail in the 1860s.
The Museum is open to the public on Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. – the docents are all volunteers. Private tours are available. Admission is free and donations are appreciated. Call 775-246-6316 or 775-246-3256.
