On Monday, April 27, Central Lyon County Fire Protection District leadership traded hoses for spaghetti and marshmallows as part of an innovative leadership workshop designed to strengthen teamwork and shape the future of the organization.

Fire captains and chief officers gathered for a five-hour strategic session focused on finalizing the District's Mission, Vision, and Core Values. The event marks the culmination of months of collaboration among operational and administrative personnel across the District. The morning began with a hands-on team-building exercise that offers a creative twist on leadership development. Participants were divided into teams and challenged to construct the tallest freestanding tower using only 20 pieces of dry spaghetti, three feet of masking tape, and a single marshmallow. The tower had to support the marshmallow at its highest point for five seconds. The winning team constructed a 33-inch-tall structure that resembled the Eiffel Tower.

While the challenge may appear simple, the exercise reflects the very skills firefighters rely on every day. The exercise is designed to emphasize communication, innovation, leadership, and problem solving under pressure —qualities essential in emergency response and organizational success.

As a result of the workshop, District leadership drafted the Mission, Vision, and Core Values, which will serve as the foundation for future strategic planning and service to the residents of Central Lyon County.
