On Thursday, May 21, the Virginia City High School Class of 2026 proved that big accomplishments can come from small classes. During the school’s Senior Recognition and Scholarship Night, more than $150,000 in scholarships was awarded to numerous graduates from a class of just 30 students.

Local businesses, nonprofits, memorial funds, and community organizations all stepped up to support students as they prepare for their next chapters. Scholarships were awarded to seniors pursuing careers and studies in fields ranging from business, journalism, medicine, and engineering to hands-on trade school programs and technical careers.

“Academically, this class is just as impressive,” VCHS College and Career Coordinator Kim Hames said during her speech. “Eleven of our seniors just graduated Monday from the WNC Jump Start program with their Associate’s Degrees—before they even receive their high school diplomas. What a remarkable accomplishment!”

Hames also encouraged students to carry their determination and ambition into the future.

“To the Class of 2026: congratulations,” she said. “As you move forward into the next chapter of your lives — whether it be college, career, military service, or new opportunities — remember the lessons, friendships, and memories you have made here. Continue to dream big, work hard, and believe in yourselves. We are excited to see all that you will accomplish in the future.”

VCHS Class of 2026 Graduation Ceremony is this Friday, May 29 at 6 p.m.
