A wide range of local and regional agencies came together on March 28, 2026 to support a full-scale wildfire evacuation drill in the Mark Twain community, highlighting the level of coordination required to respond effectively in a rural setting.

“This drill included multiple local and regional agencies, and that collaboration is critical in a real emergency,” said Adam Wilson, Storey County Emergency Management Director. “Working side by side allows us to identify gaps, strengthen communication, and ultimately better serve our residents.”

The exercise brought together Storey County Fire Protection District, Storey County Sheriff’s Office, Storey County Public Works, Storey County Health & Community Services, the Storey County Manager’s Office, and Storey County Emergency Management. Assisting agencies included Lyon County Office of Emergency Management, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Central Lyon Fire, Carson City Office of Emergency Management, the Nevada Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, NV Energy, and the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Storey County Emergency Management will host a follow-up Town Hall to review the drill and share lessons learned with the community.

The Town Hall will take place on April 23, 2026, from 6 to 8 PM, at the Mark Twain Community Center (500 Sam Clemens Avenue, Mark Twain, NV).

During the meeting, Emergency Management staff will discuss:

• Participation numbers

• Communication performance, including Smart911 alerts

• Evacuation timing and traffic flow

• Areas identified for improvement

• Next steps in emergency preparedness planning

The Town Hall will also include updates on park feedback and other county initiatives. Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions and provide input on all topics.

The drill was designed to simulate a wildfire evacuation and strengthen coordination between residents and first responders. Community participation plays a critical role in evaluating and improving emergency response efforts.

If residents have questions about the drill, please contact our Emergency Management at 775-847-3577.
