Odeon Oldies Presents Memoirs of Iva Gruber
On Sunday, Oct. 12, Katie Hasbrouck, owner of the historic Union Hotel in Dayton, brought local history to life as she shared the story of Iva Gruber—a young girl who came to live at the hotel in 1917 when her father dropped her there to go work in the mines and her mother was committed to an asylum in Reno. Iva spent 13 years growing up within the hotel’s walls and captured those years in heartfelt memoirs. Hasbrouck read vivid excerpts from Iva’s writings, weaving them together with fascinating details about daily life in Dayton during the late 1800s and early 1900s, giving listeners a glimpse into the past.
Katie and her husband Glenn Hasbrouck purchased the Union Hotel in 2016, taking on a massive restoration project to preserve its legacy. The hotel, now recognized as Nevada State Historical Marker 186, stands as both a testament to Dayton’s enduring history and a symbol of the Hasbroucks’ dedication to keeping those stories alive.
