Miners Union Hall to Open for America's 250th Birthday
As the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Virginia City's historic Miners Union Hall will open its doors to the public for a day of history, heritage, and patriotic reflection.
Hosted by the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Comstock Aerie No. 523, the Hall will open at 9 a.m. on July 4. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the historic building and view a collection of artifacts that tell the story of the organizations and individuals who helped shape life on the Comstock. The Hall will temporarily close during Virginia City's Fourth of July Parade before reopening for the remainder of the afternoon.
Among the featured exhibits will be the original Virginia Miners Union banner dating to 1867. Bearing the motto, "By Industry We Thrive," the banner is one of the most significant surviving artifacts associated with the organization that represented Comstock miners during Nevada's mining boom. More than 150 years later, it remains a powerful reminder of the men whose labor helped build the prosperity and reputation of the Comstock.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to view a collection of exceptionally well-preserved artifacts from the Fraternal Order of Eagles, including historic regalia, photographs, documents, and memorabilia that reflect the organization's long stewardship of the Hall and its contributions to the Virginia City community. Many of the items on display are rarely available for public viewing and offer a unique glimpse into the history of one of America's most influential fraternal organizations.
Constructed in 1876 during the nation's Centennial year, the Miners Union Hall has served as a gathering place for nearly a century and a half. From labor meetings and civic functions to celebrations and charitable activities, the building has remained an important part of community life and one of Virginia City's most enduring landmarks.
At 4 p.m., local piano player, Ethan Robinson, will present a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. The reading continues a family tradition and offers visitors an opportunity to hear the words that announced the birth of the United States 250 years ago.
The event provides a unique opportunity to celebrate Independence Day while exploring the history of one of Nevada's most significant historic buildings. From the original Virginia Miners Union banner to the preserved artifacts of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the exhibits reflect the people, organizations, and traditions that helped shape both the Comstock and the nation.
Admission is free and the public is welcome. Donations are always appreciated and help support the preservation of the historic Miners Union Hall for future generations.
