Lyon County Cleans Up Dayton Encampment
During the May 21 Lyon County Board of County Commissioners meeting, Lyon County Community Development provided an update on the cleanup and code enforcement efforts at 490 Cemetery Rd. in Dayton (APN 016-151-14). This 10-month, multi-agency effort was carried out to address public health, safety, and environmental concerns associated with the illegal encampment on the property.
Lyon County departments and partner agencies – Sheriff's Office MOST Team, Code Enforcement, Human Services, Central Lyon Fire, and Waste Management of Northern NV – coordinated with the property owners to obtain approvals, conduct a formal trespass order posting on April 16 (for 30-50 individuals living onsite daily), and ensure individuals onsite left the property according to the 48-hour Notice to Vacate by April 18. No arrests, use-of-force, or significant disturbances were reported.
Cleanup operations occurred April 19-29, during which time the site was cleared of hazardous debris, abandoned vehicles, temporary structures, and accumulated waste. Lyon County Community Development shared this Summary and Scale of Operation:
- Vehicles removed: 17
- RVs removed: 12
- Stick-built structures removed: 2
- Roll-off dumpsters utilized: 13
- Total waste volume removed: approx. 390 cubic yards
- total debris weight: approx. 97 tons (195,000 lbs.)
- Scrap metal removed (processed separately): 35+ tons
Scale of Operation: if the debris was spread evenly across a standard American football field from end zone to end zone, it would cover the entire playing surface to an approximate depth of 2.5 inches.
