For veterans living in rural areas, accessing information about available assistance programs and resources can often feel overwhelming. However, AMVETS Post #1 in Reno is working to bridge that gap by bringing services directly to Northern Nevada’s rural communities. Their outreach supports veterans with needs including transportation, housing, food, clothing, benefits, and more.

Every second and fourth Friday, AMVETS hosts an outreach event at the Silver Springs Senior Center and Community Center (2945 Fort Churchill Rd.) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering critical, in-person assistance to local veterans.

"We leave no veteran behind," wrote Grace Frank, Post #1 public relations officer and past post commander. "If we hear of a veteran in need, we are all over it – making phone calls, handing out contact  information, and doing all we can to get whatever they need as fast as we can."

The outreach program was launched four years ago by acting Post #1 Commander Timothy Frank, whose vision helped bring consistent support to Silver Springs and surrounding areas.

"None of this would be possible if it were not for Reno AMVETS Post #1 giving [Timothy] the OK to move forward with his idea of doing an outreach in Silver Springs," wrote Grace Frank. "Since then we all have helped numerous Veterans get the help they needed and we want to keep that trend going."

AMVETS works closely with the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System and its outreach program. Every quarter, AMVETS and the VA come together at the Silver Springs Senior Center to provide coordinated, comprehensive support services to veterans.

Reno AMVETS Post #1 is currently the only post in Nevada and the organization is actively seeking new members and volunteers to expand its impact.

"Our post has one goal and that is to reach as many veterans as we can to help them have a better quality of life," Grace Frank said.

The next Silver Springs AMVETS outreach days are April 10, April 16 (with VA), and April 24 at the Silver Springs Senior Center and Community Center.

If you are a veteran who cannot make it during outreach hours, you are encouraged to call Timothy Frank at 775-224-6755 or Grace Frank at 775-276-2470 with questions.
