America 250 Pony Express ReRide Celebration Comes to Historic Dayton

DAYTON, Nev. — Dayton Main Street, in partnership with Nevada Pony Express Territory, America 250, and Historical Society of Dayton Valley, invites the community to attend the America 250 Pony Express ReRide Celebration on Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Dayton’s Historic Old Town District.

This free, family-friendly nonprofit event celebrates America’s upcoming 250th birthday while honoring the historic events, people, and cultures that helped shape Nevada and the American West. The celebration will also highlight the upcoming National Pony Express ReRide, scheduled to pass through historic Dayton on June 24, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.

Visitors will step back in time and experience the spirit of the Old West through interactive demonstrations, historical exhibits, reenactments, and hands-on activities for all ages.

Event Highlights Include:

  • Take a photo as a Pony Express rider, sit on a Mochila – bring your cowboy hat!
  • Meet the Virginia City Silent Riders, Nevada Civil War volunteers, and Old West characters
  • Ride the speeder car on the depot tracks — if you can avoid the bank robbers!
  • Participate in the Mochila Handoff Stick Pony Relay Race
  • Learn and play children’s games from the 1800s for prizes!
  • Try gold panning where gold was first discovered in 1849
  • Watch telegraph demonstrations and learn about Nevada’s historic Constitution telegraph to Washington, D.C.
  • Explore exhibits from local Comstock-area nonprofits focused on preservation and heritage
  • Help the Lyon County Sheriff track down Dayton’s “Most Wanted Outlaws”
  • Tour Dayton’s historic Pony Express Relay Station, Firehouse/Jail, and the Dayton Museum

Guests can also enjoy local restaurants, food trucks, bakery treats, and coffee available throughout the event.

“This event is a wonderful opportunity for families and visitors to experience the living history of Dayton while celebrating the spirit of America 250,” organizers said. “We are proud to showcase the stories, traditions, and community partnerships that continue to preserve Nevada’s rich heritage.”
