On Oct. 4-5, the 36th Annual World Championship Outhouse Races took over C Street for a weekend full of poo puns and human-powered latrines, born from a historic protest that has since become one of Virginia City’s most beloved – and bizarre – traditions. A sea of spectators lined the boardwalks, cheering on more than 20 colorful teams and their homemade outhouses during the most intense commode competition this side of the Mississippi.

The festivities kicked off Saturday with the Parade of Outhouses, giving teams a chance to show off their prized creations, many of which have become annual fan favorites. The races started with a bang – courtesy of Rick Ireland – as two teams of pushers and drivers sprinted uphill for a grueling 10 seconds or less to a photo finish.

Between races, teams caught their breath while spectators joined in the Toilet Bowl Games, featuring human bowling, toilet paper relays, and other bathroom-inspired contests. The live DJ and announcers kept the crowd “rolling” with laughter, plenty of bathroom banter, and sound effects that could only come from an event this.

Sunday’s competition brought out the fierce contenders, each team determined to be number one (and avoid being number two). The final race between El Baño and Who’s on Turd was downright steamy, with El Baño pulling ahead and setting the fastest race time of the day at 8.76 seconds.

Spectators and Competitors alike soaked up the perfect fall weather, good-natured wisecracks, and the pure joy of watching fully grown adults flush their competition – all for bragging rights and a stack Charmin.
