Virginia City, Nev. — The 601 Vigilance Committee made a memorable debut at the world-famous Virginia City World Championship Outhouse Races, entering the competition with its appropriately named outhouse, “601 Gunslingers Last Dump.”

The annual event drew thousands of spectators to historic C Street as teams raced their custom-built outhouses head-to-head through the heart of Virginia City.

The 601 may not have had the fastest entry on the course, but it certainly made an impression.

Weighing in at 367 pounds, the Gunslingers Last Dump earned recognition as the Heaviest Entry in the competition, well above the 200-pound minimum required to race.

601 Vigilance Committee Executive Director Lee Nashold summed up the team’s performance simply:

“We weren’t fast, but we looked good.”

That may have been an understatement.

The driver competed in red long johns, cowboy boots, and a dusty cowboy hat while seated inside the rolling outhouse. Rumors quickly circulated that the 601 should have received another award for best-dressed driver.

Beyond the laughs and friendly competition, the 601 Vigilance Committee was proud to support the young people helping make the event possible. The organization donated $500 to the college students serving as outhouse pushers, providing what the 601 considers a small scholarship in recognition of their hard work and education.

The Virginia City Outhouse Races began decades ago as a political protest after outdoor toilets were banned and residents responded by pushing, pulling and dragging their outhouses to town. Today, that rebellious spirit lives on through one of Virginia City’s most unique and entertaining traditions.

The inaugural run of the 601 Gunslingers Last Dump was made possible by the 601 members who helped build, race, support and cheer on the team throughout the weekend.

And while the first outing resulted in a heavyweight title, discussions have already begun about putting the Gunslingers Last Dump on a diet.

The 601 plans to return next year, hopefully a little lighter, a little faster and just as well dressed.

Special thanks to every 601 Vigilance Committee member who participated in and supported the inaugural run of the Gunslingers Last Dump.
