Storey County Warns of Multiple Phone Scams Impersonating Sheriff’s Office and Jury Duty Notifications
Storey County officials are alerting residents to multiple ongoing phone scams in which callers are impersonating law enforcement and court officials in an attempt to obtain money and personal information.
In one scam, residents report receiving calls from individuals claiming to be Storey County Sheriff’s Office deputies. In some cases, the phone number displayed may appear similar to or identical to official Sheriff’s Office phone numbers. The caller demands payment and threatens that a warrant will be issued for the recipient’s arrest if they do not comply.
In a separate scam, residents are receiving calls claiming they have a warrant for arrest for failing to appear for jury duty. Callers demand immediate action to “clear your name.”Storey County officials emphasize that both types of calls are fraudulent.
Storey County will never call residents to demand payment, request personal information, or require immediate action to resolve a warrant, jury duty matter, or other legal issue over the phone.
If residents receive one of these calls, they are urged to:
- Do not provide any personal or financial information
- Do not engage with or follow instructions from the caller
- Hang up immediately
- Contact the Storey County Sheriff’s Office at 775-847-0959 or the Storey County Clerk’s Office at 775-847-0969 to verify any concerns and report the incident
Officials encourage residents to remain cautious, verify all suspicious communications, and report potential scams promptly.
