Storey County Board Reviews Updates on Infrastructure, Community Programs, and Public Safety
Storey County officials provided updates on infrastructure projects, community programs, and public safety initiatives during a recent Board of County Commissioners meeting held on Oct. 7, 2025.
Emergency Management has scheduled a Lockwood Flood Evacuation Drill for Saturday, Dec. 13, with an informational Town Hall on Nov. 12, which will be held at the Lockwood Senior Community Center on 800 Peri Ranch Road.
In coordination with the Nevada Department of Transportation, the county is addressing traffic congestion along USA Parkway, Waltham Way, and Patrick areas. Temporary traffic signals funded jointly by Storey County and NDOT are set to be put in place, and additional signals at USA Parkway intersections with Denmark and Waltham are expected within 30 days. Public Works also installed stop signs near the Patrick Interchange to help manage traffic entering I-80, while discussions continue with the Washoe Regional Transportation Commission on a potential connector road linking north USA Parkway to LaPosada Drive.
The Lockwood Senior Community Center will hold its ribbon-cutting event on Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. at 800 Peri Ranch Road.
Storey County recognized the service of two employees: Battalion Chief Shane Dixon retired, and Netty Strong was honored for 10 years of service.
The Assessor and Recorder Offices shared an update about the Declaration of Value form, which has been updated due to a 2025 legislative change. This is submitted for recording any title-transferring document, such as a deed. The update incorporates a property tax abatement selection. There is a grace period through December 31, 2025, and starting January 1, 2026, only the updated form will be accepted with any deed or title transfer.
The Clerk-Treasurer’s Office completed its fifth mock election of the year. Staff is also reviewing procedures for managing the eventual elimination of pennies from circulation.
IT staff tested a Starlink connection at the Petroglyphs to support remote camera monitoring and installed a 10 GB fiber link between the Divide Building and the Emergency Management building, allowing the county to retire its last DSL line.
Fire District crews participated in local events including the Outhouse Races and performed a high-angle rescue on Geiger Grade. Two cadets began 16-week training at the Capital City Fire Academy. The Sheriff's Office reported no fatalities during the Street Vibrations Fall Rally for the third consecutive year.
Project updates included a new vehicle storage building at the Mark Twain Community Center, improvements at the Fairgrounds and B Street Rockery Wall, and refurbishing all seven Comstock water storage tanks.
Upcoming events in Virginia City include Hauntober festivities throughout October, and Mark Twain Days (Oct. 17–19), highlighted by the Great Fire Memorial on Oct. 18.
