Silver Stage Track Turns Heads at State Championship Meet
The Silver Stage High School track and field team made a statement at the State Championship meet May 15-16. Headlined by standout performances from sprinter Wylie Devencenzi, who claimed first place in both the 100m and 200m, the SSHS team brought home results worth talking about. The performances sent a clear message: championships are built on the home track. Devencenzi’s back-to back titles were the highlight of a meet that showed Silver Stage can compete with anyone in the Battleborn State.
In addition to Wylie’s breakout achievements, Gabriel Castaneda proved his versatility earning 4th place in the 110m hurdles before heading right back up to the starting line as part of the 4x200m relay team, which finished in 6th place alongside Chance Kapci, October Gonzales, and Cohen Lenwell. Senior McKayla Phoenix also finished off her senior year with a 5th place showing in the high jump competition, a result worth celebrating as one academic chapter closes and another begins to open.
Standing proudly behind the team was a coaching staff that couldn’t have been more excited about the standout performances. Head Coach Leia Devencenzi, Assistant Coach Ashlee Cross, and volunteer assistant coaches Mitch Phoenix and Shawn Howerton have laid the foundation for future stars at SSHS.
For the underclassmen that competed at State this year, the results not only thrilled the participants, they gave the clear impression that Silver Stage produces athletes who belong at the top level and that college recruiting may not be far behind.
