SCSO Investigating Animal Abuse Case in Storey County - updated

On July 4, 2025 the Storey County Sheriff’s Office responded to a remote property in Storey County, Nevada for a report of possible animal abuse. Deputies observed approximately 18 horses and burros in poor health. An investigation was immediately opened. Over the course of the following days, local horse advocacy groups and the Department of Agriculture were contacted. Coordination of resources were planned. During this time, the Storey County Sheriff’s Office assisted the property owner in providing food and water to the animals on scene.On the morning of July 7, 2025 the Storey County Sheriff’s Office, Wild Horse Connection, and LRTC Large Animal Rescue team arrived at the property. All horses and burros were safely removed from the property and transported to Dayton, Nevada where they will receive veterinary care and rehabilitation.This is still an active and ongoing investigation. The Storey County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Wild Horse Connection and LRTC Large Animal Rescue for their critical assistance in this incident. We also thank Lyon County, Nevada for providing space for these animals. Further information may be released upon completion of the investigation.
