Political Submissions Policy
Purpose:
The Comstock Chronicle is a community newspaper dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories, heritage, and ongoing life of the Comstock region. Our mission is to inform, connect, and celebrate our community through nonpartisan, ethical journalism. To uphold this commitment, the Chronicle maintains a clear boundary between community reporting and political promotion.
Policy Statement:
The Comstock Chronicle does not publish political press releases, opinion pieces, or promotional content submitted by or on behalf of political candidates, campaigns, or parties. Our intent is to remain strictly nonpartisan and avoid any appearance of endorsement or bias.
We may, however, publish:
•Official notices from election offices or civic organizations (e.g., voter registration information, polling locations, or candidate forums).
•Announcements of nonpartisan public events where all qualified candidates are invited to participate.
•Verified news coverage written by Chronicle staff that provides balanced and factual information about local issues relevant to our readers.
Any paid political advertising must:
•Be clearly labeled as “Paid Political Advertisement”
•Comply with federal, state, and local election advertising laws, including:
o Federal Election Commission (FEC) Regulations – 11 CFR §110.11: Disclaimer Requirements for Political Ads
o Nevada Secretary of State – Campaign Finance and Advertising Laws – NRS Chapter 294A (Nevada Campaign Practices and Finance)
o Storey County Election Guidelines
o Lyon County Election Guidelines
All political advertising must be offered on equal terms to all candidates and parties. The Chronicle reserves the right to reject or request revisions to any submission that violates applicable laws or our editorial standards.
Rationale:
Our community’s trust is our most important asset. This policy ensures that The Comstock Chronicle continues to serve as a fair, reliable, and inclusive platform for local information—focused on history, culture, and community rather than political affiliation.
