A 1914 illustration of one Ben Franklin at his printing press...a glimpse of a bygone era.

It is my duty to inform our subscribers that there will not be a printed edition of your favorite newspaper this week.

For the contributors and team of the Comstock Chronicle, this newspaper is a labor of love. Far from a profitable enterprise, it is a chance for each of us to to give back to the community where we all live and work. It is a way for us to share the joy of life on the Comstock, and spread our gratitude to a growing list of subscribers.

Our core team (including myself) is entirely volunteer, with some regular contributors (not including myself) paid a small amount to cover their weekly expenses. We pay for services where needed in design, printing, billing, distribution, and mailing. In each of these cases, the services are provided at a more than friendly rate by people who care about us and our mission. On countless occasions, this team has gone above and beyond what is required by monetary compensation.

Each week for some time now, the paper has brought in just barely enough to keep the lights on. Last week, it did not. We look forward to once again hearing the hum of the printing press if this situation changes. In the meantime, the simple fact is that our print edition consumes most of our resources, and our online edition retains the most views.

There is a long history of struggling newspapers on the Comstock; we are fortunate to be the ones with a choice to evolve. Never ones to stand idly by, we have taken the following steps to ensure the Chronicle's continuation in whatever capacity our community should support.

  • Our website will continue full operation.
  • We will quickly be adding online advertising options.
  • Legal ads & Classifieds are now posted in their own section of the website for easier access. These have also been distributed to county offices by print and to subscribers by email, thus continuing to fulfill our service to Storey County.

There are several possible outcomes for our Chronicle, including online-only, but it is my hope that we are able to return to print in some capacity. In the end, a good newspaper exists to serve its community. If printing every week should prove impossible, perhaps we will find our niche with a different publication schedule. We're looking forward to the next step in this adventure, whatever it might be.

I am grateful for the past months of hard work, and for the opportunity to labor alongside such wonderful people. At the Cabin in the Sky, it is late in the afternoon, and it is time to hit send on this missive. I remain humbly at your service.

Signing off, AG
