Independence Day on the Comstock is always top-notch. I’ve seen many fireworks displays in my life, and I’m here to tell you, dear reader, that it isn’t just about the explosives and pretty lights. It’s about community, love for your countrymen, freedom, optimism, and all those ethereal qualities that also are some of the components of true patriotism.

The most expensive fireworks display fades quickly, but community and brotherly love prevail—and that is truly a strength of the Comstock. It seems to me that most of us deeply love our country and are grateful to be here. So, when the fireworks start to go off, it’s just the icing on the cake for an already glorious American birthday.

It is my heartfelt belief that we are all blessed to live in the greatest country on earth, enjoying freedoms that can scarcely be imagined in many places. I am infinitely fond of our particular corner of the free world. Samuel Francis Smith never did say exactly what region inspired these lyrics from “My Country, ’Tis of Thee,” but you’ll likely agree with me that they describe the Comstock perfectly:

I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills
Like that above.

And with that, the sun is rising over the Cabin in the Sky, and it’s time to hoist the flag and prepare for the 4th. Until next week,
