Man Who Died in Weekend Motorcycle Crash in Virginia City Identified

A man who died in a weekend motorcycle crash in Virginia City has been identified.

Stephen Klein, a 34-year-old Reno man, died in the crash, according to a release from the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Storey County deputies say an officer tried to stop a black Harley Davidson motorcycle after it nearly went head-on with a deputy on C Street near Taylor just after 8:45 p.m. on Sunday.

Deputies say the Klein slowed down, looked over his shoulder, then sped off going the wrong way on North C Street near Sutton Street. Eventually, the deputy found the motorcycle lying on the ground on North C Street at North D Street.

Authorities say the motorcycle hit the guardrail, throwing Klein down an embankment.

Despite life-saving measures by paramedics, he died on scene.

Deputies say alcohol is suspected to be involved.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is handling the crash investigation, while the Lyon County Sheriff's Office will be conducting a coroner's investigation. If you witnessed this incident, call 775-847-0959 and refer to case 26-1052.


Motorcycle Rider Succumbs to Injuries

STOREY COUNTY, NV - On July 12, 2026, at approximately 8:50 p.m., a Storey County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted a traffic stop on a black motorcycle after the motorcycle nearly went head-on with the deputy on C Street in the area of Taylor Street in Virginia City.

The solo rider of the motorcycle slowed down, looked over his shoulder, then rapidly accelerated on north C Street. The deputy was unable to keep up with the motorcycle as it was traveling at a high rate of speed north on C Street in the southbound lanes near Sutton Street. The deputy continued northbound where he observed the motorcycle laying on its side on north C Street at north D Street. The motorcycle hit the guardrail causing the rider to be ejected from the motorcycle and down the embankment. The Deputy quickly located the rider and began life saving measures as paramedics were dispatched to the scene. Despite all attempts, the rider succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased.

The Nevada State Police are handling the crash investigation while the Lyon County Sheriff's Office will be conducting a coroner investigation. If you witnessed this incident, please call 775-847-0959 and refer to case 26-1052. At this time, speed and alcohol appear to be a factor.
