Joining Forces – Speed Enforcement Event

PRESS RELEASE – Throughout the month of July, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office will be teaming up with other law enforcement agencies for a Speed Enforcement Event.
Deputy Lynch and Deputy Sousa of the Fernley patrol area want to remind you to pay attention to your speed. The speed limit is not a suggestion, it’s the law!
The Joining Forces Speed Awareness Campaign aims to increase law enforcement participation and public safety by coordinating highly visible patrols across the State of Nevada with the goal of raising awareness, educating the motoring public, and saving lives.
Speeding is more than just breaking the law. The consequences are far-ranging:
·Greater potential for loss of vehicle control.
· Increased stopping distance after the driver perceives a danger.
· Increased degree of crash severity leading to more severe injuries.
· In 2023, there were 11,775 fatalities in speeding-related crashes — a decrease of 3.1% (12,157) from 2022.
· Speeding-related crashes accounted for 29% of total traffic fatalities in 2023.
· 37% of male drivers and 19% of female drivers in the 15- to 20-year-old age group involved in fatal traffic crashes in 2023 were speeding — the highest among the age groups.
· 36% of all motorcycle riders involved in fatal crashes in 2023 were speeding.
· Motorcycle riders 21 to 24 years old involved in fatal crashes had the highest speeding involvement at 51%.
· In 2023, 88% of all speeding-related traffic fatalities on American roads occurred on non-interstate roadways
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office remains dedicated to bringing the number of fatalities on Nevada’s roadways to zero through increasing public awareness about the dangers of speeding, driving unrestrained, impaired driving, distracted driving and more.
