Honoring the Retirement of K9 Borys – A Faithful Partner and Friend

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 31, 2025 – The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the retirement of K9 Borys, who has faithfully served our community since July 2017 alongside his dedicated handler, Sergeant Wayne Hawley. Over the course of his distinguished career, K9 Borys has been an indispensable member of our team — protecting citizens, assisting deputies, and exemplifying the unwavering loyalty and dedication of a true working dog.
From his very first deployment, K9 Borys demonstrated an exceptional drive to serve. His keen nose and tireless work ethic helped remove dangerous narcotics from our streets, locate suspects who sought to flee from justice, and assist in countless investigations. These accomplishments only tell part of his story — his true legacy lies in his steadfast devotion to duty and the strong bond he formed with his handler, fellow deputies, and the community he served.
Beyond his crime-fighting abilities, K9 Borys became a beloved ambassador for the Sheriff’s Office. He attended countless school demonstrations, community events, and public safety presentations, leaving a lasting impression wherever he went. With his calm demeanor and gentle presence, he bridged the gap between law enforcement and the public, reminding everyone that courage and compassion can work hand in hand.
Now, after eight years of dedicated duty, K9 Borys will trade his patrol vest for a well-deserved spot on the couch, enjoying a life of rest, treats, and leisurely walks. Upon retirement, Borys will remain with Sergeant Hawley and his family, where he will continue to be surrounded by the people who love him most.
As he begins this new chapter, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest gratitude to K9 Borys for his exemplary service. He will forever be remembered not only as an exceptional K9 officer but also as a much-loved member of our law enforcement family — and, above all, as a very good boy.
On behalf of the men and women of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, and the citizens of Lyon County, thank you, Borys. Your watch is complete — you’ve earned your rest.
