Historical Society of Dayton Valley Celebrates Another Successful Season
On Saturday evening, Dec. 13, more than 60 members of the Historical Society of Dayton Valley gathered at the Dayton Community Center to celebrate another successful year of preserving Dayton’s 176-year old history. Thanks to Vicki Kinney and Margie Sidener for chairing the event. Their efforts made the historic high school gym shine with festive red, green, and white, brightening the annual event. It also honors those who have gone the extra mile during the year, or even for years, to spend their time working as docents at the Museum on weekends or for special occasions, while others have donated their time shoring up old buildings, painting them, cleaning the yard, inside the museum, etc. There is always plenty of work to do inside the Museum too!
I was proud to present the annual “Laura Tennant” award to Carol Bauer and Katrina Hedlesky and a special award of a Lifetime Membership to Lee Vecchiarelli for the years she has spent preserving Dayton’s history that began around 1984. Each of these hard-working volunteers’ activities over the years was read to the audience, including their amazing educational backgrounds, and will be posted in the HSDV newsletter that is compiled and edited by Margie and Glenn Sidener every three months.
Years ago, Carol Bauer organized a group to create a movie about Dayton history using the inside of the Museum and she sent it to a Film Festival and we won! She has been an excellent docent at the Museum since then.
Katrina Hedlesky not only enjoys being a docent, but she has also taken charge of managing the books we sell, keeping the Museum in stock, and is creating photo albums of events we organize, such as the Haunted Hayride, and of the most recent Holiday party and the awards night.
The Dayton Museum is closed for the winter season until the first weekend in March when we reopen. We will do tours and take visitors interested in their genealogy through the Museum. Leave a message for Laura at 774-246-3256 or at the Museum, 775-246-6316 (this museum number is not checked daily.)
