Historic Sutro Tunnel and Flyability Complete 1,000 ft. Drone Flight of Tunnel
Event celebrates innovation, preservation, and community support

Dayton, Nev. — The Friends of Sutro Tunnel Charity recently partnered with Flyability, a global leader in confined-space drone technology, for a landmark exploration inside the historic Sutro Tunnel. Flyability’s specialized drone flew more than 1,000 feet into the tunnel, capturing high-resolution imagery and data to support ongoing preservation and safety efforts. The partnership with Flyability demonstrates how history and technology can come together powerfully,” said Rob McFadden, Director of the Friends of the Sutro Tunnel Charity. “Their work inside the tunnel brings us closer to understanding and protecting this remarkable engineering achievement.”
In addition to the drone mission, the day was a celebration of the supporters, donors, and volunteers who have helped keep the Sutro Tunnel restoration project moving forward. Distinguished honorary guests were also recognized for their contributions during the event.
Flyability’s successful flight provides detailed visual data from deep within the tunnel that would otherwise be difficult and hazardous for human crews to obtain. This data will be used to support safety planning for visitors, structural understanding, and long-term restoration goals.
The footage also allows Sutro Tunnel to expand its offerings to the public. In 2026, the Sutro Tunnel historical site will host a variety of cultural and community events, including performing and visual arts, film showings and more. Weddings and private events will also be offered. Tours are available now with a reservation, and ghost tours are coming soon.
