Historic Donovan Mill Preservation Projects and Future Plans

The Donovan Mill remains the centerpiece of our preservation efforts, with major milestones achieved this year and ambitious plans underway.
Old Blacksmith Shop Restoration
The shop at the north end of the Mill was in dire need of stabilization. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, the building was braced, lifted, and saved from collapse. New siding, windows, and a retaining wall were installed, along with a fresh concrete floor.
Electrical Installations
Generous donations from Briggs Electric and WESCO allowed us to complete Phase I of the electrical upgrade, which now powers the machine shop, office, and refinery. With Jensen Engineering’s plans in hand, Phase II will electrify the Main Mill, tank room, and south buildings. Briggs Electric is preparing estimates, and we will need significant fundraising to move forward.
Blacksmithing Classes
Although we lost our longtime instructor last fall, three of his top students are pursuing instructor certification with the California Blacksmith Association. Their commitment ensures this historic skill continues at Donovan Mill.
Donations and Grants
We are grateful to the Daughters of the American Revolution for funding the full restoration of the Main Mill’s windows. Volunteers meticulously milled, painted, and installed the new frames, protecting the Mill for decades to come. We also extend thanks to the Northern Nevada Ghost Hunters and our many community donors who keep preservation alive.
