Gold Star Families To Be Honored
The last Sunday of September is Gold Star Mothers and Families Day. Gold Star families have lost a loved one in service to the United States Armed Forces, paying the ultimate sacrifice. Two remembrances will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28, to honor Nevada’s Gold Star families.
The first event will begin at noon at the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza, located at 300 Howard Dr. in Sparks. The one-hour ceremony will include 10 Gold Star families. The second event is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home, located at 36 Battle Born Way in Sparks. All Gold Star families and survivors are invited to arrive at 5 p.m. to meet other families before the event begins.
The Gold Star Memorial Monument honors not only the 896 Nevadans who died in service of their country, starting with the Civil War, but also hundreds of individuals whose parents have moved to Nevada since their family member’s death. This year’s annual luminary ceremony begins shortly before dusk with a reading of the Gold Star Mother and Family Proclamation.
