News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dayton, Nevada – The Dayton, Stagecoach, and Silver Springs areas of Lyon County were severely impacted by flash flooding yesterday afternoon which began at approximately 4:00 PM. Lyon County Emergency Management, Roads, and Utilities Department staff coordinated closely with Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Lyon County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Nevada State Police and Nevada Department of Transportation to quickly close areas of US50 in Dayton and Stagecoach and Ramsey Weeks Cutoff in Silver Springs which had fast moving debris and over 12 inches of water.

These road closures occurred at peak commute hours which caused significant delays. Please understand that flash flooding is a life safety issue. Public safety agencies responded to several reports of vehicles stuck in mud and ditches that drove into flood water. Over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars and just 2 feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters. Please turn around, don’t drown.

Lyon County crews are working as quickly and efficiently as possible to unplug clogged culverts and clear debris from roadways before additional storms that are forecasted to impact our communities this afternoon.
