Fernley City Councilman Arrested

*****For Immediate Release***** On August 18, 2025 at approximately 1459 hours, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to the area of Shadow Lane and US 50 Alternate in Fernley, Nevada for a reported altercation. Upon arrival, Deputies met with the construction crew doing work in the area. One of the workers reported he was approached by 64 year old Fernley City Councilman, Stan Lau, who was upset with the traffic control in the area. A verbal altercation ensued, which ultimately led to Mr. Lau grabbing the sunglasses off of the workers face, leaving a minor injury. The workers said Mr. Lau broke his sunglasses and threw them on the ground. When the worker went to pick the glasses up, he advised Mr. Lau punched him in the face. No physical evidence of the punch was located. Mr. Lau left the scene prior to Deputies’ arrival. The worker requested criminal charges against Mr. Lau and to place him under citizen’s arrest. Deputies conducted an investigation into these claims and determined probable cause existed to effect an arrest. Due to the incident occurring outside the presence of the Deputies on scene and the alleged crimes being misdemeanors, Mr. Lau was taken into custody on a citizen’s arrest. He was booked into the Lyon County Jail for the following charges: NRS 200.481 Battery Bail Amount: $1140.00 NRS 206.310 Injury to Property Bail Amount: $1140.00 If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Lyon County Communication Center at 775-463-6620 and request to speak with Deputy Steven Vawter.
