Discover the Art of Letterpress Printing at the Historic Fourth Ward School Museum

Virginia City, NV — The Historic Fourth Ward School Museum & Archive invites guests to discover the centuries-old art of letterpress printing through a series of hands-on workshops led by experienced printer Steve Robison.
Dating back more than 550 years, letterpress printing is one of history's most enduring printing techniques. During these four-hour workshops, participants will learn the fundamentals of hand-setting type and operating a traditional press while creating a unique hand-printed keepsake to take home. Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite quote to set in type— we'll provide the type!
Workshop attendees will also have the opportunity to experience this historic craft in an equally historic setting. Classes are held in the Fourth Ward School's Mark Twain Room, home to a restored 1887 Chandler & Price printing press and the museum's permanent Mark Twain exhibit. The workshops are offered as the Historic Fourth Ward School celebrates its 150th anniversary, making this a unique opportunity to connect with both the history of printing and one of Nevada's most iconic landmarks.
The workshop fee is $25 for non-members and $20 for Fourth Ward School Museum members. Workshops are held from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the following Saturdays:

● Sept. 19, 2026 (Special Commemorative Print for 150th Anniversary after 2pm)
● Oct. 17, 2026
Workshops are open to adults 18 years of age and older. Participants under the age of 18 may attend when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Because class size is limited by the instructor's equipment and supplies, walk-in participation cannot be guaranteed. Advance registration is strongly encouraged. Reservations will be accepted until three days prior to each workshop to allow adequate time for preparation of materials and equipment.
