Central Lyon Fire Expands Fleet to Meet Growing Demand
Guest Contributor: Battalion Chief Ryan Johnson, Central Lyon County Fire Protection District
If you live in Central Lyon County you probably see ambulances driving up and down Hwy 50 daily. Central Lyon Fire is an all-risk Fire District providing fire protection, technical rescue, fire prevention, and emergency medical services. The Fire District covers 640 square miles from Mound House to Silver Springs on the Hwy 50 corridor and also provides emergency services to all other townships which are Silver City, Dayton, Mark Twain, and Stagecoach. In 2025, Central Lyon Fire ran 4,314 calls for service – 3,267 of those calls were medical emergencies and traffic collisions which require an ambulance response.
In 2025, our ambulances accumulated 238,716 miles by responding to all sorts of emergencies on both paved and dirt roads throughout our response area. These ambulances receive a lot of wear and tear but do receive regular maintenance and repairs from our mechanics. Two personnel are regularly staffed on an ambulance, and they have specialized training and equipment to help render advanced life support to the sick and injured. Our ambulances transport patients to several hospitals all over the region from Carson City to Reno to Fallon and even Yerington.
To make sure we keep up with the demand for service to the public we serve, the Central Lyon County Fire Board of Directors authorized two new ambulances to be purchased in 2025. These ambulances now cost over $300,000. The new replacement ambulances take approximately 18 months to be fully built. The Fire District is expecting to receive them at the end of 2026 or beginning of 2027. After receiving them they will be stocked with medical supplies and will go into service and be ready to serve the people of Central Lyon County.
The Fire District has grown in the last few years and our response times to emergencies are faster than ever. That is important because time matters for good patient outcomes. When you call 911, we show up. Our Firefighters, Paramedics, and EMTs are well trained and ready to help you in your time of need 24/7 and 365 days a year.
We would like to thank the community for their support. Central Lyon Fire is honored to serve and protect this community. Stay safe.
