B Street Road Work Underway; Update Shared at June 17 County Meeting

A three-month road rehabilitation project is now underway in Virginia City, with work focused on B Street from the south intersection with C Street to the north intersection with C Street. Cruz Construction Co., Inc. began construction Monday, June 23, with crews scheduled to work Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Road closures and traffic delays are expected throughout the duration of the project.

The update was shared during the Storey County Board of Commissioners’ June 17 meeting, along with reports on emergency preparedness, fire staffing, and ongoing capital improvements.

The board also formally recognized ZIP code 89437, assigned in 2018 to McCarran, home of the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center. The designation by the U.S. Postal Service has helped streamline mail delivery and administrative operations in the growing industrial area.

Emergency Management staff reported that the wildfire evacuation drill held June 14 in the Virginia City Highlands was a success, with strong participation from residents, county departments, and regional partners. A public town hall will be scheduled in late July to review what went well and identify areas for improvement.

In staff reports, the Fire Protection District shared that three firefighters were recently promoted in Lockwood. Seventy applications have been received to fill open positions at the station. Work also continues on the planning phase for Station No. 75, with a request for qualifications currently open for design services.

Progress also continues on several capital projects. Interior finishes are underway at the Lockwood Community & Senior Center, which remains on track for a September opening. The Milan Drive traffic signal contract is in place, and the TRI-Center bathroom remodel bid is expected to open June 26. The Justice Court project is now complete, including installation of the new generator.

In other updates, new road barriers have arrived and will be used for special events and emergencies. The IT department completed a 10-gigabit backbone installation in preparation for the Storey County and CC Communications fiber buildout. Tourism staff confirmed Fourth of July events will include a noon parade, free concert, and fireworks after dark.
