Another "WOW" Moment on the Comstock

You all know I have my little "Aha!" moments...but Saturday, July 18 was one of those rare WOW moments that remind you exactly why this place has stolen my heart.

We packed up the grandkids, our chairs, an umbrella, and what felt like the entire kitchen sink, and headed to the Silver City Fireman's Ball fundraiser. It was hotter than Hades but tucked beneath the shade of one of the beautiful old trees in the park, with the rolling Comstock hills surrounding us, life just seemed to slow down.

The Silver City Fireman's Ball wasn't just an event—it was a celebration of community. Great food, live music, kids playing, neighbors visiting, and everyone coming together to support the Silver City Volunteer Fire Department. You could feel the heart behind it all, and that's what made it so unforgettable.

One place served some of the yummiest hamburgers and hot dogs, sweet treats, cold sodas, water, beer...and yes, I even spotted a few margaritas making people smile. 

 Live music filled the air all afternoon—from country favorites to some head-banging rock and everything in between. The grandkids spent hours on the swings and playground, then had their faces painted by some incredibly talented young ladies. Watching them run around with huge smiles on their faces for hours was pure joy.

At one point, I kicked off my shoes and planted my feet in the cool grass. If you know me, you know grounding myself like that fills my soul.

One gentleman walking around taking photos paused for a moment and said something that summed up the entire day:

"It doesn't get any better than this... where dogs roam and children are playing."

Boy, ain't that the truth.

Everywhere I looked there were happy kids, wagging tails, colorful tie-dye shirts, people dancing, music filling the park, and laughter echoing through Silver City. It was one of those picture-perfect afternoons you wish you could bottle up and keep forever.

But as wonderful as the food and music were, the real stars of the day were, once again, the wonderful Characters of the Comstock.

We visited with Carson Nancy, Evangeline and her father, and met so many wonderful people throughout the afternoon. Every conversation reminded me why this community is unlike anywhere else.

Then we met Cowboy Jim and his grandson, Logan. What an incredible pair.

Jim shared stories about Silver City, the history, the people, the whys and the how's that only someone who truly love this little town can tell. And when it was time to head home, he had Logan walk Jilly, me, the grandkids, and all of our chairs, umbrella, and mountain of stuff back to the car.

Now tell me... how often does that happen these days? That simple act of kindness spoke volumes about the people who call this place home.

As I looked around, I realized something. This little slice of heaven isn't just a beautiful place to visit. It's a place where you feel like you belong.

No pretending.
No ulterior motives.
No expectations.

Just genuine people, honest conversations, laughter, music, community...

I've been to Silver City many times—for Dr. Elston's talks, fundraisers, and other community events—but Saturday felt different. It reminded me that sometimes the best memories aren't made because something extraordinary happened...

They're made because you found yourself surrounded by extraordinary people.

To everyone who organized, volunteered, performed, cooked, served, and simply showed up—thank you. You made the Silver City Fireman's Ball more than a fundraiser. You created a day where families could unplug, neighbors could reconnect, children could simply be children, and complete strangers could leave feeling like friends.

The Comstock has a way of capturing your heart—and this time, Silver City reminded me exactly why. 

Here's to small towns with big hearts, where neighbors become friends, and everyone is welcome.
